Calicut University, as you all know is the second oldest and the largest Univerety of the state of Kerala, that caters to the needs of a large number of rural, semi-urban and urban students of the state as well as to several national and intemational students.Established in 1968, the university is imparting higher education to over three hundred thousands students.

Dr M Abdul Salam, the current Vice Chancellor of Calicut University, is a renowned educationist, scientist and administrator. In a career spanning more than three decades and straddling across four continents, Abdul Salam has established a reputation as a tireless academic and scientist besides being recognized as one of the most authoritative voices in the area of tropical farming and dry-land cultivation. As an international consultant on cashew cultivation and dry-land farming, his expertise in the field has been utilized by governments and institutions in India, Suriname, Mozambique, USA, UK, Liberia, UAE, Kuwait etc.
Besides being an esteemed scientist of international repute, Abdul Salam is an academic with more than hundred and fifty research papers and 13 books to his credit. In the last three decades, he has served various institutions in the capacities of teacher, researcher, scientist and administrator. Before assuming charge as the Vice Chancellor of Calicut University, he had served as the head of the Cashew Research Station at Kerala Agricultural University. His tenure at the University as the Head of the Department and the Associate Dean was remarkable for the structural and administrative reforms he implemented in the institution.
As a scientist and academic, Abdul Salam has won several national and international awards and fellowships. These include the Commonwealth Academic Fellowship, Krishi Vijnan Award, Vice President GS Pathak Prize, Ponnuswami Chetiar Medal and a host of other recognitions. His PhD thesis won the Foreign Examiners’ Donation Award. Subsequently he won the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship to undergo postdoctoral training and research at University of Aberdeen, Scotland.
Having championed the cause of food security and being a firm believer in sustainable development, Abdul Salam has made several positive contributions to our understanding of water management, tropical farming, and increased production of cashew nuts through the use of hybrid and drought- resistant varieties of plants.
Dr. Salam is also a member of various national and international bodies that include New York Academy of Sciences, Indian Society of Plantation Crops, Mangalore Cashew growers Association etc. Currently he is on the editorial panel of international journals like Journal of agro meteorology, Kuwait Journal of science and Engineering, Asian Journal of Water, Environment and Pollution, etc.
Dr. Salam’s appointment as the Vice Chancellor of Calicut University has brought about several qualitative changes on the campus. Besides ensuring a more disciplined but academically active and creatively inspiring ambience for studies and research, the Vice Chancellor has been responsible for setting up of the Directorate of Research and the Directorate of Self-financing Institutions. These academic bodies have within a short span made their presence felt by pioneering some novel projects and programs. Introduction of e-governance and the ambitious plans to build state of art facilities for academics and sports are expected to catapult the University to the forefront of higher education institutions in the country. A local institution with global standards firmly rooted in the present but eagerly looking into the future is what Calicut University aims to be under the stewardship of the scientist and visionary at its helm.
